Throughout the history of the church, many families have asked for their homes to be blessed. While this is typically done during the season of the Epiphany due to the connection of the visitation of the Magi to the home of the infant Christ, “blessings of the home” can be performed anytime of year.
There are many positive reasons to have a “blessing the home.” It is an opportunity for families to be strengthen through the hearing of God’s Word. It provides a dedicated opportunity for prayer. It gives the pastor an opportunity to visit with members of his parish. It can be an opportunity to develop a pattern for holding family devotions in the home.
A “blessing of the home” typically consists of the following:
- Invocation and Opening Rite
- Devotion based on a Biblical text
- Blessing of the entry way, living and family rooms, kitchen, and bedrooms
- Final Blessing
